Total alcohol consumption is still at its lowest level in 50 years

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that although the total alcohol consumption in Australia has remained stable, the consumption of spirits has increased, while the consumption of other categories of alcohol has either decreased or remained stable.

The Australian alcoholic beverage company stated that data shows that the majority of Australians still drink responsibly, and our alcohol consumption is still at its lowest level in 50 years.

Andrew Wilsmore, CEO of the American Bar Association, said: "It is very important that we understand the bigger picture.". The data still shows a long-term decline in consumption, which means that the vast majority of Australians are responsible for moderate alcohol consumption

He added, "The small increase in alcohol consumption reflects the increasing number of boutique distilleries and cocktail bars, which has brought consumers more choices. In the past few years, there have been significant innovations in this field.

Although people's drinking habits are changing, overall, we understand from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare that both harmful and underage drinking are at historical lows, and these statistics are more insightful than per capita figures.

There has been a significant cultural shift, with young people aged 18 to 24 experiencing the largest decline in alcohol consumption, with their alcohol consumption far lower than any previous generation.

Australians are increasingly controlling their health and well-being, and these statistics indicate that Australians can do the right thing in moderate and responsible drinking

Robert Long, Acting Director of Health Statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, said of these data: "In 2017-18, the average alcohol consumption per person aged 15 and above in Australia was equivalent to 9.51 liters, similar to 9.48 liters in 2016-17.

Based on the average daily consumption, this is equivalent to 2.08 standard drinks per person, which is the same as in 2016-17. Interestingly, we see an increase in mental consumption, which has been declining recently, "he said.

Compared to the previous year, the per capita consumption of spirits and ready to drink beverages has increased from 1.79 liters to 1.89 liters. The consumption of beer is relatively stable at 3.71 liters, while the consumption of wine, which is almost equivalent to beer, has recently slightly decreased from 3.74 liters to 3.67 liters during the same period

This latest data shows that in the recent period, the long-term trend has stabilized, with per capita pure alcohol consumption decreasing from 13.09 liters in 1974 75 to 9.51 liters in 2017 18

From 2017 to 2018, beer accounted for 39.0% of all available pure alcohol, while wine accounted for 38.6%. This is in stark contrast to 40 years ago, when beer accounted for 67.6% of the available pure alcohol for people aged 15 and above, and wine accounted for 18.6%, reflecting the changing consumer preferences over time
